Learning the Dharma

Learning the Dharma

It is a source of infinite satisfaction for human beings to encounter the Buddha’s teachings and to learn and know them by heart. This is because the teachings bring us Shakyamuni’s wisdom, giving us the opportunity to attain a tranquil state of mind and live a happy life.

Knowledge is fundamental for humanity, and action begins with knowledge. To learn, correctly understand, and validate the Buddha’s teachings serves as the basis for practicing the Buddha Way. Accordingly, Rissho Kosei-kai considers learning the Dharma, or the practice of studying and understanding the Dharma, as one of the basic practices of the faith.

Learning the Dharma means correctly understanding the Buddha’s teachings and continually reflecting on them in light of our daily lives. In a broad sense, this process is what it is to walk the Buddha Way, and all of the other basic practices are included within it.
