To commemorate the publication of a Spanish translation of The Threefold Lotus Sutra, titled El Sutra del Loto, a symposium was held March 14th at the Nicolas Salmeron Cultural Center in Madrid, Spain. The theme was Buddhism and Christianity in Dialogue: Presentation of the Lotus Sutra. Some 200 people participated, including a number of Madrid citizens. The event was sponsored by the Asociación para el Diálogo Interreligioso de Madrid (Association for Interreligious Dialogue of Madrid, or ADIM), with the assistance of Kosei Publishing Company in Tokyo. Rev. Kotaro Suzuki, director of Rissho Kosei-kai International, and Mr. Moriyasu Okabe, president of Kosei Publishing Company, participated from Japan.
In January El Sutra del Loto (consisting of the Sutra of Innumerable Meanings, the Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Law, and the Sutra of Meditation on the Bodhisattva Universal Virtue) was published jointly in Spain by Ediciones Sigueme in Salamanca and Kosei Publishing Company.
During the symposium, Dr. Juan Jose Tamayo Acosta, director of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Sciences at Carlos III University of Madrid, delivered the keynote address, "Religions in the Contemporary World." Rev. Suzuki had a dialogue with the translator, Rev. Juan Masiá, a Roman Catholic priest and professor of ethics at St. Thomas University in Amagasaki near Osaka, Japan, and formerly a professor at Sophia University in Tokyo. The dialogue was moderated by Mr. Antonio Minguez, vice president of ADIM. Rev. Masiá and Rev. Suzuki affirmed the importance of interreligious dialogue, giving the audience an overview of the activities of the Nerima Religious Leaders' Society in Tokyo, which Rev. Masiá and Rev. Suzuki have coordinated over the past ten years. Mr. Okabe spoke on behalf of Kosei Publishing Company, the publisher of The Threefold Lotus Sutra in English. |
