President-Designate Speaks at "Mercy" Symposium in Rome

November 2016

Rev. Kosho Niwano, president-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai, attended a symposium November 3- 4 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome on the theme "Mercy Is a Universal Value." Some fifty people attended, including leaders of religious organizations, people from the political world, and members of the Board of Directors of the Vienna-based King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID). President-designate Niwano serves as a director of KAICIID. The symposium was held during the Roman Catholic Church's Jubilee of Mercy (December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016), the first day of which marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council, on December 8, 1965.

The symposium's opening ceremony was addressed by Bishop Miguel Angel Ayuso Guixot, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and Mr. Faisal Bin Abdulrahman Bin Muaammar, secretary-general of KAICIID.

President-designate Niwano participated in a plenary panel of religious leaders on November 3. Explaining the Buddhist principle of dependent origination, she said that nothing exists independently. She described her visits to camps for refugees and internally displaced persons in Lebanon in August and in Nigeria in October. She said she felt helpless before the plight of the refugees but became convinced of the importance of action to help them. She expressed her hope to humbly contribute to efforts for peace, saying that consideration for others would bring peace and reconciliation to the world and be deepened by tackling the world's problems.

Before the symposium, on November 2 President-designate Niwano visited the headquarters of the Community of Sant'Egidio in Rome, a movement of Catholic lay people dedicated to evangelization and charity. On behalf of President Nichiko Niwano she signed an agreement to promote partnership between Sant'Egidio and Rissho Kosei-kai for work in Africa. In collaboration with Sant'Egidio, Rissho Kosei-kai has been developing aid projects in Mozambique and Malawi. Under the agreement, they will expand these aid projects to other parts of Africa and cooperate further to rescue Africans suffering from poverty and exploitation.
