February 2016

On February 19, Rev. Noriko Nakamura, vice chair of the Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace, visited Baco and saw the progress of recovery from the disaster. In December the powerful typhoon Melor hit the Philippines and caused floods and landslides throughout the country. Forty-two people died, 24 people were injured, and four went missing. In January, the Executive Committee of Rissho Kosei-kai's Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace entrusted one million Japanese yen ($8,791) to the San Lorenzo Ruiz Learning Center Baco in the village of Baco, in the province of Oriental Mindoro on the island of Mindoro, for emergency relief of the aborigine Alangan Mangyans, who suffered from damage caused by the typhoon. On February 19, Rev. Noriko Nakamura, vice chair of the Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace, visited Baco and saw the progress of recovery from the disaster.

The center distributed food and blankets to the Alangan Mangyans and repaired their houses. It also helped them plant banana trees, potatoes, eggplants, and other crops in their shared farmlands. The center will also provide them with mosquito nets and other supplies.

The center's president, Ms. Rosalina Melendres-Valenton, showed Rev. Nakamura the restored shared farmlands. At the center, letters of thanks from Alangan Mangyans were read out and schoolchildren sang songs for Rev. Nakamura. In return, she handed out some 100 mats (for bedding) to schoolchildren and residents.
