Rissho Kosei-kai Marks 78th Anniversary

March 2016

On March 5 Rissho Kosei-kai commemorated its 78th anniversary, in the Great Sacred Hall at the headquarters in Tokyo and Dharma centers throughout Japan. Some 4,300 members gathered in the Great Sacred Hall, from where the ceremony was relayed by satellite TV to all Dharma centers in Japan and webcast to Dharma centers overseas.

The ceremony opened with 16 young women, representing all young women members in Japan, carrying offerings to the altar before the image of the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni. After that President-designate Kosho Niwano led the sutra recitation and read out a tribute to the Buddha, composed by President Nichiko Niwano.

Rev. Takeshi Kawabata, chair of the Board of the Trustees, delivered his greetings. He reaffirmed the principles of Founder Nikkyo Niwano's Dharma talk on the 61st anniversary. On that occasion the founder said he hoped as many people as possible would find true happiness by living the kind of life taught in the Lotus Sutra. Rev. Kawabata said the founder's words should always be the focus of all members' daily religious practice.

This year 243 Dharma center officers who had contributed greatly to Rissho Kosei-kai and 213 other members deserving special recognition each received an award, a letter of thanks, and a commemorative gift from President Niwano. On this occasion in the Great Sacred Hall, two respective representatives received them from him directly.

President Niwano then presented a letter of thanks and a commemorative gift to two representatives of the 243 officers of Dharma centers who had greatly contributed to Rissho Kosei-kai and 213 members who deserved special recognition.

A representative officer from the Koriyama Dharma Center in Fukushima Prefecture then testified to her faith.

Rev. Takeshi Nishida, the director of Ittoen, a Kyoto-based community of people who own nothing and devote their lives to service, delivered a congratulatory address on behalf of the distinguished guests. After that President Niwano gave a Dharma talk. He said people tend to evaluate themselves in comparison with others, but should realize that just as every face is unique, every person is unique and deserves respect as a precious individual.

The ceremony ended with one pupil from Kosei Kindergarten in Tokyo presenting a bouquet of flowers to President Niwano and another pupil presenting one to Mrs. Niwano.

Afterward, another anniversary celebration was held in the Horin-kaku Guest Hall.
