Rissho Kosei-kai Commemorates Anniversary of Founder's Entrance into Nirvana

October 2016

Rissho Kosei-kai observed on October 4 the 17th anniversary of Founder Nikkyo Niwano's decease and entrance into nirvana, in the Great Sacred Hall at the organization's headquarters in Tokyo and all Dharma centers throughout Japan. Some 3,400 members from 71 Dharma centers took part in the ceremony in the Great Sacred Hall, to cherish the memory of the founder's virtues and rededicate themselves to more diligent bodhisattva practice in gratitude for the legacy of the founder's teaching. The ceremony was relayed by satellite TV to all Dharma centers across the country.

Before the ceremony in the Great Sacred Hall, President Nichiko Niwano performed the ritual of opening the door of the Precious Stupa of the One Vehicle, which houses relics of the founder.

The ceremony in the Great Sacred Hall began with music performed by the brass band club of Kosei Gakuen Girls' Junior and Senior High School. Sixteen women members representing chapter leaders across the country then brought offerings before the image of the Eternal Buddha. Everyone observed a moment of silence, pondering the virtues of the founder and the significance of their encounter with the Buddha's teachings through him. After that President-designate Kosho Niwano led the assembly in reciting the Lotus Sutra and read out a tribute to the founder written by President Niwano. After that President Niwano offered incense and gave a Dharma talk.

President Niwano said that if members followed the founder's guidance of the Rissho Kosei-kai sangha like obeying the captain of a ship, practicing the teachings single-mindedly and selflessly together, they could reach the "other shore" of buddhahood. President Niwano also recalled incidents from the founder's life, saying his guidance had liberated many people from suffering.

President Niwano referred to the first sentence of the Meditation on the Place of the Way in the sutra readings: "Let it be known that this is a place of the Way." He said this means diligently practicing the teachings everywhere in the course of daily life.
