President-Designate Meets Representatives of Humanitarian NGO based in Beirut, Lebanon

President-designate Kosho Niwano conferred on November 18 with three representatives of the National Institute of Social Care and Vocational Training (NISCVT), a humanitarian NGO based in Beirut, Lebanon. They met in the Horin-kaku Guest Hall at Rissho Kosei-kai headquarters in Tokyo. NISCVT is one of the partner organizations in Lebanon for Rissho Kosei-kai's Dream Bag Project for children suffering from conflict. The project is promoted by Rissho Kosei-kai's Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace. Every year NISCVT distributes small bags of gifts prepared by children in Japan, called Dream Bags, to many Palestinian children in refugee camps in Lebanon.

The NISCVT representatives were Mr. Kassem Aina, its general director; Mrs. Kassem Aina (Faiza Masri), a senior officer and, as a dentist, in charge of promoting the NGO's dental care program for refugee children; and Ms. Aziza Shahada. Also present at the meeting were Ms. Yoshiko Tanaka, secretary general of Campaign for the Children of Palestine (CCP), a Tokyo-based NGO that supports NISCVT's centers for refugee children, which are called Houses of Enduring Children, and Rev. Masahiro Nemoto, Rissho Kosei-kai's executive specialist in charge of interreligious cooperation and chair of the steering committee of the Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace.

The meeting began with Rev Niwano thanking the NISCVT representatives for their kind coordination of her visits to five refugee camps in Lebanon from August 23 to September 1, when she visited Lebanon with Rev. Nemoto's project evaluation team to learn more the living conditions of Palestinian refugees and their children. Ms. Aziza is the leader of the House of Enduring Children in the Wave refugee camp near Baalbek, one of the five camps Rev. Niwano visited.

Mr. Aina told Rev. Niwano that Palestinian refugees and their children feel greatly supported by Rissho Kosei-kai members' constant close attention to their needs. He said the children are delighted to receive the Dream Bags. Mrs. Aina said consideration for others by sharing their feelings means taking a deep interest in them. She said the Dream Bags show Rissho Kosei-kai members' concern for of Palestinian refugees and their children.

NISCVT is providing services for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and other disadvantaged people of different nationalities living in the camps. It was established in August 1976 after the Tel al-Zaatar massacre, to provide assistance and accommodation for orphaned children who lost their parents during the massacre. The three representatives visited Japan at the invitation of CCP, and their main purpose was to attend a symposium held by CCP on November 20 in Tokyo on Palestinian refugees.
