Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace Supports the Victims of Armed Conflict in Mindanao

June 2017

On July 1, the steering committee of the Rissho Kosei-kai Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace announced it would donate 500,000 Japanese yen to the Mindanao Children's Library (MCL), a local nongovernment organization in the Philippines, to support its distribution of food, medical supplies, and clothing to people displaced people by the recent armed conflict in Marawi, which is the capital and the largest city in the province of Lanao del Sur on the island of Mindanao.

In May, the Maute Group, an armed group that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, attacked government facilities, hospitals, and universities in Marawi, resulting in the destruction of that city and causing the death and wounding of many citizens. According to a Philippine government report, more than 400 people were killed. Some 400,000 citizens evacuated to Iligan, 30 kilometers to the north, to temporary shelters or the homes of friends or relatives.

MCL is a Rissho Kosei-kai partner organization that promotes peace projects in the Philippines and helps the less privileged children of Mindanao. Its aim is to support and protect the welfare of children. MCL also provides emergency relief to the victims of armed conflicts and natural calamities.
