A Jewish Leader Visits Rissho Kosei-kai Headquarters

August 2017

Rabbi David Rosen, the international director of interreligious affairs of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and an international president of Religions for Peace, visited Rissho Kosei-kai headquarters in Tokyo on August 6, and conferred with President Nichiko Niwano at Horin-kaku Guest Hall. Also present were nine members from AJC, including board directors. Attending from Rissho Kosei-kai was Rev. Takeshi Kawabata, chair of the Board of Trustees.

AJC is an international advocacy organization whose key area of focus is to promote religious and civil rights for Jews internationally. Rabbi Rosen and his fellow members visited Japan to take part in the 30th Annual Interreligious Gathering of Prayer for World Peace that was held August 3-4 at Enryakuji, the head temple of the Tendai Buddhist Denomination, on Mount Hiei near Kyoto.

At the beginning of the meeting, President Niwano and Rabbi Rosen exchanged their impressions about this annual interreligious event on Mount Hiei, which both men had attended. President Niwano expressed his gratitude for their visit to the organization's Tokyo headquarters.

Rabbi Rosen explained that AJC has promoted its activities worldwide. He then spoke that protecting and empowering not only Jews but also minority groups would lead to the enhancement of society as a whole. He also said precisely because there are many religions and ethnic groups in this world, a true peace will not be brought to all of us unless we recognize the differences of others and respect each other. He also emphasized the importance of holding one's own faith the right way, and aspiring to shared values while cherishing diversity.
