Youth Training Program Held in Phnom Penh

July 2017

The second youth training program was held at the Rissho Kosei-kai Phnom Penh Dharma Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on July 30, welcoming 25 participants, including 10 non-members who are friends of Cambodian members at school or in the workplace.

The program's theme was "Applying the Teachings of Buddhism to Our Everyday Life."

Rev. Masatoshi Shimamura, Director of Rissho Kosei-kai International South Asia, and Mr. Keisuke Katayama, a staff member of Rissho Kosei-kai International Group at headquarters, served as lecturers, visiting Cambodia to devotedly support the Cambodian members and the branch, as the Phnom Penh Dharma Center is under the management of the South Asian Division.

Rev. Shimamura and Mr. Katayama provided three lectures for Cambodian youth members: "The Eightfold Path" (the fundamental teachings of Buddhism), "Taking Refuge in the Three Treasures," and "Bodhisattva Practices in the Living Life."

Following the lectures all participants joined in a hoza session (Dharma circle), one of the important practices for Rissho Kosei-kai members. Mr. Sor Songheng, an area leader in charge of Phnom Penh Dharma Center, took the role of hoza leader.

In the hoza session, participants discussed their impressions or self-awareness of one another in relation to the day's youth training program. They also shared their own problems with their sangha friends or spoke about their future goals for studying or working together. One participant offered, "I learned about the 'Three Practices at Home' as a concrete daily discipline through the lecture of "The Eightfold Path," so I will start with one of the three practices, 'Greetings with my family every morning'." Another participant said, "I had a really precious time here thanks to Cambodian Dharma friends. What I learned through the lectures for today was the importance of the right behaviors, and the greatly valuable ways for bodhisattva practice that Shakyamuni Buddha had realized."
