Oeshiki Ichijo Festival Held at RKK Headquarters in October

October 2017

On October 15, members of Rissho Kosei-kai International Buddhist Congregation (IBC) joined the Oeshiki Ichijo (One Vehicle) Festival at Rissho Kosei-kai's Tokyo headquarters. IBC has been working this festival for the past five years in collaboration with the Yamato Dharma Center of Kanagawa Prefecture, with 230 people participating together for this year.

Unfortunately, the weather was rainy all day long, but it did not stop everyone from having an excellent experience. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., groups of 40 or more began their turns marching, with the last group finishing at 6 p.m. In total, more than 7,000 people attended the festival with a sense of unity and harmony, in spite of having to wear raincoats on a chilly fall day. In this endeavor, the performers felt much empathy and experienced the Buddhist teaching of "Many in Body, One in Spirit" deep in their minds through such precious and valuable collaborative marching.

The participants trained and practiced hard for their performances in the Oeshiki parade, including matoi (moving and twirling a matoi to remove evil in the mind. It is originally used as a symbol of firemen), and a fue (bamboo recorder), kane (bell) and taiko (Japanese small drum) performance. On the day of the festival, performances were given with vivid energy, and the performers experienced many unforgettable memories that allowed them to vow to practice the teachings further in their daily lives, and to also spread the Dharma to their friends, family and community more faithfully and enthusiastically.
