Rissho Kosei-kai Celebrates Its 80th Anniversary

March 2018

On March 5, Rissho Kosei-kai members celebrated the 80th anniversary of the organization's founding in the Great Sacred Hall in Tokyo and at all Dharma centers throughout Japan. Some 4,000 members attended the celebration in the Great Sacred Hall, which was webcast live to Dharma centers and other dissemination centers in Japan and overseas.

The ceremony in the Great Sacred Hall began with a vigorous Japanese drum performance, which was followed by a ritual offering before the image of the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni by 26 young women members representing Dharma centers across Japan.

Following the sutra recitation led by President-designate Kosho Niwano, President Nichiko Niwano read out a pledge of dedication to the Buddha. The pledge described the meaning of the organization's name, Rissho Kosei-kai: "Rissho signifies standing on the right Dharma, namely, the Lotus Sutra; and Kosei indicates promoting mutual exchange among people to grow spiritually together―namely, practicing the bodhisattva way cheerfully, kindly, and warmheartedly, toward achieving maturity as a human being so that people can make the considerateness and compassion of the Buddha as their own."

President Niwano then presented letters of thanks and commemorative gifts to two representatives of the 231 leaders and 264 members who had provided distinguished service to Rissho Kosei-kai's local Dharma centers and the organization as a whole. On behalf of the recipients, Ms. Masae Oomori of the Nasu Dharma Center in Tochigi Prefecture made a speech about her religious journey and expressed her gratitude for Rissho Kosei-kai's teachings, which had helped her realize the deep affection of her parents and the preciousness of life.

Representing the guests, Most Rev. Joseph Mitsuaki Takami, archbishop of Nagasaki and a member of the board of directors of Religions for Peace Japan, and Most Ven. Koei Morikawa, 257th head priest of the Japanese Tendai Buddhist denomination, delivered the congratulatory addresses.

In his Dharma talk, President Niwano explained the founding spirit of Rissho Kosei-kai and urged the members to continue diligently practicing the Buddha's teachings.
