Rissho Kosei-kai Marks Anniversary of Buddha's Entrance into Nirvana

February 2018

On February 15 Rissho Kosei-kai members observed the anniversary of Shakyamuni Buddha's entrance into nirvana. This observance took place in the Great Sacred Hall at the organization's headquarters in Tokyo as well as at all Dharma centers across Japan. Some 3,500 members gathered in the Great Sacred Hall to learn about the significance of the Buddha's entrance into nirvana and rededicate themselves to spreading his teachings.

The event in the Great Sacred Hall began with the playing of a recorded reading of an account of the Buddha''s entrance into nirvana. A painting depicting the event was also displayed on the altar. President-designate Kosho Niwano led the assembly in sutra chanting and recited a prayer of devotion to the Buddha that was composed by President Nichiko Niwano.

President Niwano then delivered a Dharma talk, in which he emphasized the importance of religion by reminding everyone that the fundamentals of religion involve teaching that we human beings are sustained to live by receiving many blessings of nature, and accepting this with a feeling of gratitude. In today's world, many people tend to think that they are living of their own accord. The role of religion lies in promoting an awareness of living not by our own strength but as part of the interrelatedness of everything around us. He noted that all of us grow and eventually die. When we realize that there is a limit on human lifespan, we are led to have a deep-seated feeling of gratitude toward all life around us.
