Rissho Kosei-kai Celebrates Shakyamuni's Birthday

April 2018

On April 8, Rissho Kosei-kai celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha at the Great Sacred Hall in the headquarters complex in Tokyo and at all Dharma centers throughout Japan.

At the gathering of some 3,800 members in the Great Sacred Hall, President-designate Kosho Niwano led the sutra recitation. She then read out a pledge of dedication to the Buddha composed by President Nichiko Niwano and poured sweet hydrangea tea over an image of the infant Buddha set in a small pagoda decorated with flowers on the hall's platform.

A boy and girl representing all the five-year-old children of members recited words of praise for Shakyamuni Buddha, and 15 Kosei Nursery School children performed a dance.

One member testified to the faith, and President Niwano poured sweet tea over the infant Buddha and gave a Dharma talk.

Referring to the Buddha's proclamation immediately after birth of "I alone am honored, in heaven and on earth," President Niwano explained that these words mean that all things in the immense universe are valued because they equally possess the unique and precious life of the Buddha. He said, each one of us is given a precious mind. Through encounters with the teachings of the Buddha, we can realize the preciousness of our own lives-and precisely because we realize it, we are led to realize the preciousness of all others.

Referring to the importance of practicing the teaching of the Four Noble Truths, he also emphasized the importance of revering and respecting everything with the mind of treasuring the preciousness of ourselves and all things

After the ceremony, 94 children in traditional Japanese costume walked in procession from the Great Sacred Hall to the Precious Stupa of the One Vehicle, which was built in memory of Rissho Kosei-kai's founder Nikkyo Niwano. They poured sweet tea over an image of the infant Buddha set in a small pagoda before the stupa.
